The town of Goreme is situated in a fairy-tale land recently discovered by the real world. Here, the traditional, conservative people whose families have lived here for generations coexist peacefully year by year with the ins and outs of modern travellers of all sorts from the world over. The Open Air Museum, a little over a kilometer from the town center, is one of Turkey’s World Heritage Sites, and there’s plenty enough to see here to fill an entire day. Walking down fantastical winding paths, climbing whimsical rock formations, and admiring the frescoes, rock-cut churches, Byzantine dwellings, and the dreamlike topography of Cappadocia is a sensation-filled trip few other places on earth can come close to matching.
