This charming little town, due to its protected status, has remained largely untouched by any kind of modern development. Established in the 7th Century BC by colonists from the nearby isle of Lesbos, Assos was once home to the philosopher Aristotle, and is, not surprisingly, a good place to sit around and just think. Bring a good book and just laze around, soaking in the aromatic Aegean air and the clear rays of sun. Today, numerous small hotels, pensions, and cafés dot its picturesque harbor, from where it is about a 20-minute walk to explore the village.
