Fethiye was blessed with a well-protected harbor shielded from storms by a series of offshore islands. Unfortunately, however, it was not so blessed by the gods of fault lines, and most of the town, in existence since 400 BC, was levelled by an earthquake in 1958, though some ancient ruins and tombs do remain in good condition. Less crowded than many of the nearby resort towns, Fethiye is a pleasant little vacation destination on the very south-western corner of the Turkish coast.
