Dramatically situated in a narrow bay ringed by mountains, Izmir is Turkey’s third-largest city, with a population of 2.5 million, and is an important port on the Aegean. The great poet Homer lived here in the 9th century BC (when it was known as Smyrna), writing his poems from the serenity of a cave just outside of town. Once described as “the most beautiful of all cities” by the ancient geographer Strabo, and mentioned by St. John as one of the Seven Churches of the Revelation, Izmir is today a major commercial and industrial center, where you can enjoy strolling down wide European-style boulevards, prowling for bargains at the extensive bazaar area, and partying the night away at lively waterfront cafés.
